Used, open-box and scratch & dent are not the same thing
A used appliance has been installed and run in someone's home. An open-box unit was bought, unpacked and returned. A scratch & dent unit usually never made it out of the warehouse — it picked up a mark in handling, which is enough for a big-box store to pull it from full-price stock. That distinction matters more than the price. A used fridge with eight years on the compressor and a scratch & dent fridge with a dinged side panel can sit at the same price locally, and only one of them still has its full life ahead of it.
Refrigerators
Refrigerators are the category where buying used carries the most risk, because the sealed system is the expensive part and you can't see it. If you do look at used, run it for at least fifteen minutes and feel for cold air at the vents, not just a running noise. Our used refrigerator checklist walks through the rest.
We do a basic cooling check on every fridge and freezer we list, and each one is on the refrigerators page with its model number, capacity and blemish noted.
Freezers
Chest and upright freezers are simple machines, so they survive being moved better than most appliances. The catch in Whatcom County is that used freezers are seasonal — everyone wants one at once in the fall. Current stock is on the freezers page.
Ranges and wall ovens
Cooking appliances take cosmetic abuse but are mechanically forgiving. With used ranges, check every burner or element and the oven's ability to hold temperature; with used wall ovens, measure the cutout before anything else, because a replacement that doesn't fit the cabinet opening becomes a carpentry job. Dishwashers
Dishwashers are the one category where we'd steer you away from used entirely. Seals, pumps and racks wear, and a leak under a kitchen floor costs more than the appliance did. What we'd ask any local seller
- Is it new, open-box, scratch & dent, or genuinely used?
- What's the model number, so I can look up the retail price?
- Where exactly is the damage, and can I see it in person?
- Is there any warranty, and who honours it?
- What do delivery and haul-away cost on top?
